Pair of “Sport Urns” in cast iron by Rolf Bolin for Näfveqvarns Bruk
Pair of “Sport Urns” (“Sporturnan”) in the Modern Classicism style designed in 1922 by architect Rolf Bolin (1890-1933) for the Näfveqvarns Foundry, having a rationalized form evoking a Greek krater vase, interpreted as a dynamic inverted cone on an octagonal plinth, and ornamented with sports-themed figural reliefs and crowning handles that seem to flex inward, executed in painted cast iron in a limited number beginning in 1923. Foundry name in cast relief.
An iconic example of Nordic Art Deco design, the “Sporturnan” was exhibited with the Swedish National Pavilion at the 1925 Paris Exposition, where it was awarded a silver medal.
