Extraordinary Art Nouveau table lamp by Mogens Ballin, having a cap and base decorated with stylized foliage in patinated bronze with a solid oak stand; Denmark, 1900-1907; stamped artist hallmark and “1819”

Painter Mogens Ballin (1871-1914) drew inspiration from contemporary French artistic movements, traveling to Brittany to join the Nabis, and becoming an early advocate of Symbolism. Turning his attention to decorative arts, he opened a silver/metal smith workshop in Copenhagen in 1900, creating a varied body of Art Nouveau style models. Although he sold off the business in 1907, his work influenced the next generation of designers, including Georg Jensen and Just Andersen, who both trained in his workshop.
